Terry closed his restaurant in Texas to care for his elderly mom on their family farm in Indiana. What happened next, no one could have predicted. In this "Helping Mom" podcast, Terry gives fellow caregivers real-world tips and straight-talk motivation to love & serve those who loved & served us--our parents!

Facts: 10% of aged 65+ have drug or drinking problem or addiction. Alcohol Use Disorder is the modern term. This means, of 60M 65+, 6M are addicted
40% of all alcohol related deaths in USA are in 65+ category
What are the four wives of an alcoholic? “Suffering Susan,” “Controlling Catherine,” “Wavering Winifred,” and “Punitive Polly.”
Since 2021 women drink more than men and suffer worst bodily damage due to excessive drinking.
Withdrawal is process of cutting out, or cutting back on, addictive substances. Also called ‘detoxification’, or ‘detox’. Often triggered in aged by going into nursing home, or rehab post-surgery, as now they are monitored on medication usage, and do not have access to alcohol at home.
Your mom may have a physical or psychological dependence on prescribed drug or alcohol. If physical dependence, her body will rely on taking the drug to feel normal. If she stops, she will have withdrawal symptoms.
Withdrawal symptoms may include: cravings, problems with sleep, irritability or agitation, feeling restless, trouble concentrating, mood changes, feeling depressed or anxious. Also, headaches, aches and pains, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. Severe could include confusion, and disorientation. Withdrawal symptoms can last for a few days or weeks. Cravings can last longer.
Tips to help your mom: know these things, Work closely with medical professionals, Have her doctor stop prescriptions for anti depressants and anti anxiety meds, Monitor med distro at home and keep meds in safe, Remove alcohol from house, Be patient, Pray, Be Humble.
